Figli di una società senza tempo: una lettura socio-biologica del fenomeno childfree

Unlike other primates, human beings can invest their energy resources in different, even overlapping, activities and devote much less time than other species to leisure and relax. This is especially so in the Western society -cradle of the recent childfree theoretical movement- where professional, social, institutional and family affairs continue throughout the day (Taylor, 1972). The present work analyzes from a socio-biological perspective the choice of not procreating, which can be found only in our modern culture and has no equivalent in any living species. Such action in contrast with the Darwinian Theory may be a consequence of living in developed countries: according to this idea, losing the present, mainly caused by social requests, could make some people blind to their own biological future. Finally, the childfree choice is examined in light of the theory of games proposed by Maynard Smith and Price (1973) to explain conflicts in the animal world.;
