Heath and illness are intimately connected to our social and material conditions. To improve the health of the many requires that health psychology participate in various forms of community and collective action to transform unhealthy living and working conditions. In the words of Paulo Freire, the Brazilian popular educator, we need to engage in a process of denunciation and annunciation: the act of analysing a dehumanizing realty, [and to] denounce it while announcing its transformation (see Ledwith, 2005). A socially activist health psychology participates in the broader movement to combat growing social and health inequalities and to create a more socially just and healthier society. This paper considers how health psychologists can connect with community and social movements to promote health. It considers the use of participatory action research and of community development strategies. Key words: critical psychology, inequalities, action-research
