The problem of "translation" of aspects of oriental philosophies into western psychotherapy. - Western psychotherapies often include aspects of oriental philosophies. There are at least two ways to approach this problem. One way is to acknowledge that oriental philosophies are a "world apart", with totally different world views, and to use some of their practices; in this case we may talk of integration or eclecticism, with all their controversial meanings. Another way is to take only the perspective of a western psychotherapeutic approach, and to study oriental practices in order to understand their mechanisms of action. This paper pursues the latter goal, and psychoanalytic theory is used to discuss techniques such as relaxation, autogenic training (a version of yoga), meditation, mindfulness, and other "exercises". Also western techniques are discussed, such as phenomenological epochè, Freud’s "free association" and "free floating attention", Stern’s "present moment", the "third wave" of cognitive-behavior therapy movement, and so on.

Keywords: Oriental philosophies, western psychotherapies, integration, psychodynamic therapy (PDT), cognitivebehavior therapy (CBT)
