The article illustrates some results from the 5th European Working Conditions Survey carried out in 2010 by the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions (Eurofound) based in Dublin. The results displayed refer to four specific areas of quality of work: health and health risk factors; motivation, intrinsic rewards and job satisfaction; skills, training and learning on the job; finally, work-life balance. Such areas contribute to the definition of "sustainability" of work, a concept which is strictly related to the one of quality of work and which is connected to the possibility of retaining workers in employment as long as possible, with views to active ageing. Results illustrated show a wide variety of situations, resulting from both the objective aspects of the specific job context and the perception individuals have of their job and related working conditions.
