The work analyzes the relationship between stability and size of the bank, by studying their impact on the riskiness of different bank’s business model. By using z-score’s measure (Roy, 1952; Cihak and Hesse, 2007; Beck, 2008), we referred on financial statements of Italian Cooperative Banks from 2006 to 2011 and compared the results with Italian commercial banks. By making a regression between z-score’s n-logarithm and a set of bank-specific factors, the analysis identifies potential sources of risk/opportunities related to the size of the bank and to their business model. The results, in agreement with previous studies carried out in other countries, show that, cooperative banks have a greater degree of financial stability. Particularly, they are more capitalized than the others and they invest less in derivatives. Therefore, they may play a role in stabilizing financial system during the crisis.
