This article discusses common points and differences between holding and empathy as conceptualized in Carl Rogers’ client-centered therapy and in Joyce Slochower, a respected relational psychoanalyst. The therapeutic quality of empathy and of empathic feedback is the common thread connecting two ways of being in a treatment setting. We can thus see that empathy in CCT cannot be isolated from other qualities that need to be present at the same time, while, according to Slochower, the use of holding requires a temporary withdrawal from disclosures. The article reflects on the need to compare different paradigms and on the importance of being consistent in relation to one’s theoretical model but always focusing on the patient.
