The essay takes into account the criticisms of Mario Mirri on the historiography of the "gray zone", of the "war to civilians" and of the "divided memories", identified by Mirri as "leftist revisionism". The author points out the failure of the Resistance, in its various forms, to establish a national identity for a ruling class, and suggests a more stringent and limited use of the category of "civil resistance", distinguishing it from the struggle for survival.
