Che ruolo ha la condizione lavorativa materna nella tendenza ad aiutare troppo un figlio malato cronico?

PSICOLOGIA DELLA SALUTE

Fascicolo: 2 / 2009

What is the role of mother’s employment referring to overhelping tendency towards a chronically ill child? - The article presents an empirical research aimed to explore if employed (vs. not employed) mothers of chronically ill children (vs. healthy ones) overhelp more their ill children and express more negative emotions (shame, anxiety or sadness) when helping them. Twenty mother-child dyads, balanced for the child gender, were videotaped during a 10 min. gaming simulation, evoking the child’s need of being helped in relation to a simple problemsolving (puzzle). Results show that unemployed mothers tend to overhelp more their children when they are healthy (vs. chronically ill), while employed mothers tend to overhelp more their children when they are chronically ill (vs. healthy). During the helping game, unemployed mothers show significantly higher NVC’s signals of anxiety, sadness and shame, and mothers of chronically ill children show higher NVC’s signals of sadness and shame. Nevertheless, anxiety seem to be influenced by an interaction effect of mother’s employment and health status of child, similar to the one shown by overhelp behaviour. Moreover, checking for the three observed negative emotions, a significant correlation was found only between overhelping behaviour and anxiety. The role of mother’s employment as a risk or as a protection referring to the overhelping behaviour is discussed.

Doctor’s self-efficacy perception in communication with patient: a survey among Campanian hospital doctors - Self-efficacy beliefs are an important basis for action: to analyze physicians’ and patients’ communicative self-efficacy perception is the first step to understand how they relate. However, in the literature, there aren’t specific studies on the subject. In light of this background a survey was conducted, which aims to explore specific issues within doctor-patient relationship, in the eyes of hospital doctors, with the aim of investigating their communicative self-efficacy beliefs and the role they attribute to communication. Twenty hospital doctors working in five public Campanian hospitals were interviewed. Through a computerassisted qualitative data analysis the contents of the transcripts of the interviews were analysed. The results of this study contribute to bring new conceptual topics to the research on the subject and to outline the methodological framework against which to build an instrument for assessing doctor’s communicative self-efficacy; finally, in a operational dimension, they will encourage the creation of targeted training

Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS): psychological factors in the developement of the disorder Introduction. - Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) is a disorder characterized by symptoms of unknown etiology that have been attributed by patients to multiple environmental exposures when other medical explanations have been excluded. Although the pathogenesis of MCS is unknown, both physical and psychological causes have been proposed. The present qualitative study aimed to explore patients’personal experience, opinions and beliefs about MCS. Methods. Psychological counselling and semi-structured interview-guide was employed to interview 40 adults, aged 32 to 78 years, self-identified with MCS. Results. The commonly reported symptoms are hypersensitivity to the smell of chemical, headache, lack of concentration, and memory difficulties. Patients with MCS complaints claim poor quality of life, depression, anxiety, and panic attacks. Conclusion. This study suggests that MCS is a chronic and disabling condition, therefore strategies are needed to improve patients’ quality of life. Understanding the impact of illness on the global health condition is crucial to communicate with and treat persons with MCS.

Insoddisfazione corporea in adolescenza: influenze di fattori bio-psico-sociali

PSICOLOGIA DELLA SALUTE

Fascicolo: 2 / 2009

Body dissatisfaction in adolescence: influences of biopsychosocial factors - Body dissatisfaction is a central aspect for self-evaluation; pressures to maintain an ideal physique can result in disordered eating habits. In young women, body concern and anxiety related to some parts of it can be expressed through their desire to lose weight. The aim of the study is to analyze the role of some risk factors, such as Body Mass Index (BMI), low self-esteem and sociocultural influences in affecting body dissatisfaction, expressed in terms of distance from an ideal and body concern. Participants are 187 adolescent females aged between 14 and 16. Risk factors taken into consideration seem to have a different effect on the two aspects characterizing dissatisfaction. BMI, self-esteem and internalization of a thin ideal seem to influence the distance perceived from an ideal body; pressure, besides BMI and self-esteem, affect weight and body shape concern. Body shape concern seems to be influenced even by internalization and awareness. It can be observed that such risk factors, in particular BMI, play a different role in adolescents classified as normal weight and underweight.

Il dolore come rappresentazione condivisa. Indagine con operatori della salute all’interno del progetto della regione Veneto "Ospedale e territorio senza dolore"

PSICOLOGIA DELLA SALUTE

Fascicolo: 2 / 2009

Pain as shared representation. An exploratory research within the Veneto region project "Hospital and Territory without Pain" - For long, Health Psychology has been interested in the cognitive processes which shape the concepts of health and illness. Less space has been devoted to the study of pain and its representation. Adopting a social representations approach, the present paper inquires the shared features of the representation of pain. In a joint interdisciplinary project University of Padova - Hospital of Rovigo, the content, field and structure of SR shared by health professionals (N = 245) and students (N = 163) have been analysed. Data gathered through a free association task to the word-stimulus "pain" has been sub- mitted to correspondence factor analysis and to analysis of rank and frequency. The results have been discussed with professionals in focus groups. The main results show a conception which appears normative, based on "classic" dualisms such as mind vs. body, evaluation vs. experience. The prevalence of aspects of classification, coherent with the diagnostic practice, enhances the importance of formative moments which allow to widen and diversify the span of interpretations and practices relative to the understanding and treatment of pain.

Comunicazione mass-mediale sulla salute e contesti sociali di scambio: quale intreccio?

PSICOLOGIA DELLA SALUTE

Fascicolo: 2 / 2009

Mass media health communication and the context of social exchanges: what interlacement? - In this paper we discuss the results of a research program that was aimed at analysing of the situational context in which the interpersonal exchange has place the role in mediating the passage from the reception to the "use" of mass-media preventive information. The study consisted in 32 focus groups with young people (18-25 years old), on different topics related to health risks (HIV/AIDS, Alcool, smoking, light drugs), in 4 different situational contexts (face-to-face; on-line forum; on-line chat; on-line forum+chat). The study main evidences show that the different contexts of the exchange specifically influence the interpersonal "re-use" of mass-media preventive information. In particular the forum+chat seems to be the context that best orients the preventive message elaboration in the sense of a personal revision of one own’s unsafe practices.

Real efficacy of antidepressant drugs in psychiatric practice - Kirsch et al. (2002) studied all 47 randomized clinical trials (RCT) submitted by pharmaceutical companies to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for approval of the six most prescribed Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI) antidepressants. The mean difference between drug and placebo was less than 2 points on the 21-item (62- point) Hamilton Depression Scale (which is the version used in many of the these RTCs). This superiority to placebo, although statistically significant, was not clinically significant. Furthermore, 57% of the trials funded by the pharmaceutical industry failed to show a significant difference between drug and placebo. Most of these negative data were not published and were accessible only thanks to the Freedom of Information Act. Also other studies confirming this research (Whittington et al., 2004; Moncrieff & Hardy, 2007; Turner et al., 2008) are presented. These data are discussed in light of the wider problem of the roles of interpersonal relationship in psychiatric practice.

If one day I should have the chance - This paper, written by the author in the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the psychiatric residential treatment center "il Caprifoglio" is a testimony of ten long years of work in a team and is the opportunity for recounting what is meant by therapeutic environment in that structure. What strategies and expedients are considered indispensable so that every guest of the residence can feel accepted as an individual with his or her subjectivity as a human being with a story, a personality, capacities, physical and organic characteristics and an inner world. The author chose to listen to the guests’ voices. Not able to record them directly, he uses a narrative artifice which transforms their desires, fears, difficulties into a story. What emerges is a faithful and amazingly concrete view of community life.

L’invidia

RUOLO TERAPEUTICO (il)

Fascicolo: 112 / 2009

Envy - The author with extraordinary ability renders a delicate subject like envy accessible, defining a human experience as old as humankind. Traces are found in the oldest myths. The history of man is described in the Bible as a story of invidious personages. And like all that is human it is a fleeting and variegated reality. Since it cannot be declared, we can only look again at the traces that it left in literature, art and myths. Envy has to do with the experience of seeing. Etymologically it means looking sideways. The envious glance presents an aspect of illusion, both when it is directed at others and when it is directed at the self. Envy has to do with the experience of saying. It is not confessable. And slander is a way of destroying the envied one. It presents a constant characteristic: suffering, which pervades all of the relationships of the envious one who suffers for the happiness of others and takes malignant pleasure in others’ suffering. This prevents him from loving and being loved and conducts him inexorably to self impoverishment. Envy springs from a sense of lack whether real or perceived and from intolerance for ones own Copyright © FrancoAngeli N.B: Copia ad uso personale. Regional Economic Planning

SCIENZE REGIONALI

Fascicolo: 3 / 2009

Regional Economic Planning - (Paper first received, March 2009; in final form, September 2009) Abstract The paper covers the scientific debate among Italian regionalists since the mid-1970s on Regional Economic Planning, understood as socio-economic planning carried out by regional administrations and expressed in the drafting of regional development programmes. The somewhat critical survey locates contributions by Italian scholars within a broader debate simultaneously ongoing at international level, the purpose being to advance the discipline both theoretically-methodologically and in its concrete implementation. The conclusion reached is that Italian regionalists have made a major contribution to the international scientific debate especially when they have induced (at high government level and in a decidedly wider territorial context) a limited number of regions to adopt the strategic planning model hitherto applied to urban and metropolitan areas in both Italy and abroad.
