Marcella Simoni’s essay examines the intertwining between trauma and memory in the Israeli and Palestinian educational curricula, with special reference to the teaching of history. She argues that both educational systems teach narratives of history severely distorted by an emphasis on the traumatic experiences which each group maintains at the foundation of its national identity. This situation hinders the development of a consideration of the Other as real in historical, social and political terms and causes a collapse of time in which the trauma of the past finds a continuous re-actualization in the present.
