The author intends to highlight the context in which the two women’s magazines "La Donna Italiana" and "Una donna bizzarra" were founded in Rome. These, unlike other Italian magazines, worked in a territory, that of the Papal States, where press freedom found more substantial limitations than elsewhere. Studies on both magazines have shown that women were encouraged to participate in the general request for liberal reforms, and that there was a desire to stimulate a transformation to a more open and fair society, especially on the themes of political representation and juridical modernity. The essay is enriched by some rare letters found in the archive of the Museo Centrale del Risorgimento. These give a contribution to the understanding of the role women had in society before and after Italy’s unification.
