After some thirty-five years of a particularly centralizing kind of communism, since the economic liberalization in the late 1980s, profound changes have been taking place in the peri-urban area of Hanoi. The economic dynamism brought about by «market socialism» leads to the growth of rural villages, changes in the production system dues to a fast-growing and increasingly diversified demand and modifies the relationship with land. In front of this changing framework, all the actors, including the State and public authorities at different levels, rural populations and the various interest groups adjust their strategies. The farming system is gradually changing into a "conservative agriculture" based on land development, new crops and the diversification of rural activities.
