The British were constructors of empire as no other people in the modern era. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, they sought to give concrete form to their political rhetoric particularly in the public buildings they erected in their Asian possessions. Today, much of what the British put up as testimony to empire has become an architectural legacy of value to the tourist industry fostered by the nation states that emerged from that empire. This essay reviews these developments.
