The object of the study is the compatibility between symbolic interactionism and the network theory. The interpretive approach to symbolic interaction is focused on the meanings of interaction within small groups, and the processes through which collective identity is formed. The structural point of view of network theory instead emphasizes the characteristics of the network and its components (density, strength, and number of connections), as a condition of cohesion between the members of a group. The actors have the opportunity to make connections through their position within a given network, which is derived from their innate or acquired own qualities and can be only partially grasped, if at all, by the other members of a group. Consequently there are various possibilities of connecting with different groups.
