This paper takes into consideration the use of posters (of various formats) to political-communicative purposes. The case in point is Italy’s 2006 poll, which was deeply influenced by the growing advertising budgets of the political forces as well as the diversification of political communication means. The basic differences in the communication strategies of the competing alliances, center-rightist and center-leftist, are investigated from the viewpoint of textualist semiotics. Paradoxically enough, the orientation toward an emotion-grounded communication, leaving little room for readers’/voters’ inferences, proves common to both alliances. Finally, the relevant features of Prodi’s and Berlusconi’s speech are investigated, on the occasion of their Tv confrontations of March-April 2006.
