Serge Audier’s book on liberal socialism is useful for two reasons. From an historiographic point of view it shows the relevance of the Italian strand within this ideological paradigm (presented in its many variants which developed in different countries: Great Britain, France and Germany). From a critical-political point of view, the book argues that liberal socialism cannot legitimize the more moderate twists of European socialism in the XXIst century, having rather put forward a proposal of radical change of capitalistic society, very up-to-date because the present crisis of the welfare state.
