A "Culture of Violence" on the outskirts of Sao Paulo (by Pablo de Carvalho Godoy Castanho (Brazil)) - ABSTRACT: This article reflects on my experience of working for three years in one of the most violent districts of São Paulo with the recuperation and social integration of the mentally ill and people with disabilities through the promotion of open group activities in a public park. From the beginning, it became evident that gaining some insight into physical violence was crucial for engaging with that community. Understanding ‘culture of violence’ as a shared system of signs, attitudes and values that foster and are caused by physical violence, I analyze the role that psychic process has in both shaping and being shaped by this culture.
