A global perspective: beyond the full-employment society ABSTRACT: Globalisation is accentuating the advance of the techno-information economies around the world, increasing risks particularly for workers. Several socioeconomic institutions have become zombies alive but not functioning properly. The demand for trained workers is outpacing the supply; at the same time, many workers released from less technical jobs are not being retrained fast enough while others are not prepared for retraining. Job security is a thing of the past. At the same time, virtually all will be faced with finding assignments in non-traditional activities. This situation implies a shift from wage labour to citizen work and requires new institutions to enfold all citizens in activities that are appreciated by the community as desirable contributions. The goal of full employment society must be substituted by a multiple work society to give meaning and active task to all citizens in an increasingly risky environment.
