We analyze the two concepts of regional and national identity from a sociopsychological point of view, mainly within the framework of the Social Identity Theory and inter-group relationships. The first part of this analysis reviews and compares the main conceptions and definitions of identification processes. The paper then focuses on identification functions, social categorization, stereotypes and prejudices. We also take into account the relevant measurement techniques within the different theoretical approaches; in particular, we focus on surveying for regional consciousness, by means of either questionnaires or single items. Finally, we conclude with some considerations about the (political) problems that arise from the strong link between territory and identity.
