Paranoie della modernità - The author points out that in Italy - where culture remains predominantly humanistic and devoid of a solid scientific tradition - one observes the development of trends of thought suspicious of science, technology and critical rationality (the latter basic in a democratic, progressive and secular philosophy). Ideologies - that distrust rationality and science, resist the challenge of progress and hinder the comprehension of modernity - can produce groundless fears and promote anxieties of persecution, i.e. paranoia of modern times. Keywords: modernity, paranoia, diffuse fear, rational criticism.
