Psychoanalysis and social service: a way of taking care - Psychoanalysis and social environment are not two separate worlds. Although in most twentieth- century cultural history they have been thought of as belonging to specific spheres of relevance (the intrapsychic and the private on the one hand, the interpersonal and the public on the other) we could hope for a less marked dualistic vision to bridge the gap. Modern theories of complexity show us that there is a close connection between the various levels that make up our existence and that the persistence of so pronounced a dichotomy is more the result of a splitting than a fact. As psychoanalytic reflection teaches us, however, when the splitting is too sharp, our ability to master and contain the complexity of experience is compromised. Work for a recomposition capable of restoring integrity to our existence is not, therefore, an intellectual effort. It is a matter of urgency, especially in our world today where narrow-minded attitudes of rejection of otherness seem so prevailing.
