Italian possibility to achieve the Directive 2009/28/CE target (i.e. 17% for the overall share of energy from renewable sources in gross final energy consumption by 2020) relies on four main intervention strategies: energy saving, renewable energy development in heating, in transport and in power generation. Although a strong commitment in all four sectors will be vital, to date major efforts have been focussing on the electrical one. Due to a consolidated monitoring system, electrical sector is also the one for which detailed data are available for development trends analysis. Hydro, wind, biomass, geothermal and solar are here examined comparing with their estimated potential development at 2020, in order to understand what has been achieved and what remains to do.
