During the Cold War, nuclear weapons significantly affected world politics by making conflict between superpowers unlikely. On the wake of this experience, our memory tends to emphasize the stabilizing effects of the nuclear bomb, while downplaying all together the most nefarious and still obscure features of the delicate balance of terror. Nonetheless, the end of bipolarism and the concurrent fragmentation of the international system have undermined the stabilizing potential of the nuclear bomb, rather making of it a dangerous source of disorder. The recent nuclear (more or less successful) ambitions expressed by states like Pakistan, North Korea and Iran force us to amend not just deterrence theory, but also international institutions aimed at preventing nuclear proliferation,
