In the last decades, a cognitive turn has occurred in pragmatic studies. This raises the problem of the relation of cognitive pragmatics to traditional philosophical analyses, and especially to the "rational reconstruction" proposed by Paul Grice. A widely held position is that a division of roles can be made between the rational-normative level of philosophical analyses and the empirical level of cognitive approaches. It is the author’s opinion that this position is somehow ambiguous. There is an important continuity between the two projects, as suggested implicitly by Grice’s works. From this perspective, one can critique the most credited cognitive theory, i.e. Relevance Theory, to the extent that its psychological account fails to acknowledge the rational dimension of communication.
