With the Law 99, 2009, Italy has taken the first step toward a return to nuclear energy on its territory. This article aims to assess the compatibility of nuclear power with a liberalized electricity market. In this regard, the solutions adopted in Finland may provide many useful lessons. For that reason, the paper compares the information to emerge from this examination with the choices that the Italian government made and still has to make. Finally it puts forward some policy proposals to make investments in nuclear power plants compatible with the current organization of the electricity market subject to European directives.
