This paper provides an overview on the debate on the link between research and clinical practice, and retraces the origins of current "conceptual research" in the pioneering work done by Joseph Sandler and his collaborators at Hampstead Clinic of London. It is argued that the spirit of the research tradition rooted in Sandler’s work could turn out as a precious device in strengthening the interchange between "culture of research" and "culture of cure", thus preventing the formation of two isolated communities, divided in their philosophies, knowledge methods and goals.
