The legislative proposals for the cohesion policy of the EU (2014-2020) refers to the Macroregional Strategy as an evolved system of territorial cooperation. An official definition of European Strategy for the Macro-Region does not exist; this term refers to "an area including territory from a number of different countries or regions associated with one or more common features or challenges" (geographical, cultural, economic, social, etc.). The AI territories, already tied, since long time, by important integration and cooperation initiatives, started since 2010 a common path in order to obtain the status of Macroregion. The added value deriving from the start-up of the Strategy consist in an integrated and coordinated approach involving many actors, policies and funding programs.

Keywords: Adriatic-Ionian Macroregion, territorial cooperation, multilevel governance, european integration, connecting and protecting.
