The contemporary gerontological literature identifies in the maintenance of an high level of social participation and social well-being a cornerstone of positive ageing (Rowe, Khan, 1997; Stevernik, Lindenberg, Slaets, 2005). The study examined the relationships between social well-being, a construct delineated by Keyes (1998) and composed by five dimensions (social integration, social acceptance, social contribution, social coherence, social actualization) and time perspective, a construct that Zimbardo and Boyd (1999) hypothesized as formed by five dimensions (positive past, negative past, hedonistic present, fatalistic present, future). A group of 138 elderly (mean age 74,73) participated in the study. The results confirms the relevance of time perspective on the perception of social wellbeing, highlighting the negative role exerted by negative past and fatalistic present on most of the dimensions of social well-being and on social well-being as general score and the constructive role exerted by future and hedonistic present for an high level of well-being at this stage of life. Gender, level of education and family’s structure also influenced some dimensions of time perspective and social well- being.
