In the wake of the seminar "A work necessary to life. Paths and contradictions of caregiving", held in Trieste on November 24, 2011 under the aegis of the Saranz Institute, the Authors tackle the issue of the correlations between the deficient Italian welfare, female migration and the inequalities and contradictions characterizing in particular the life and working conditions of caregivers. Contemporary transnational migrations determine complex conflictual dynamics with extensive implications concerning gender, generation and nationality. Strenuous breadwinners or segregated maidservants of a new kind, the female army of caregivers immigrated on their own is causing a remarkable dislocation of both labor and interpersonal relationships. As a fundamental ingredient of the growing emancipation of western women from domestic work, such developments throw also a clear light on the persistent global chain of economic and gender subordination.

Keywords: Migration, caregiving, gender, transnationalism, welfare, economic and gender subordination
