The experiences of soil-less and simplified hydroponic soil-less gardens in particular, shown in this article, came up as a response to critical issues affecting urban horticulture, which, as FAO reiterates, is a crucial measure to tackle the growth or development of extreme poverty pockets and, moreover, they’re of great sociological interest because of their impacts on the community. The experience of Teresina shown here reveals, in fact, how ‘soil-less’ gardens, besides contrasting urban horticulture-related issues, represent local development models that can promote people and communities empowerment, thus promoting inclusion and social cohesion.
