Environmental sustainability should be more enhanced in the food system because of its environmental impacts on soil, water resources, biodiversity and of the environmental impacts of food industry. In order to improve the sector sustainability it is important to apply a new approach, based on territory and on the food supply chain. It is fundamental to assure the coherence with the objectives of food security and the effects of climate change. The main challenge for the food system is to guarantee a sufficient production level improving the general level of sustainability and the author suggests this will be possible with the adoption of an integrated planning strategy and tools that consider all the phases of production along the food chain and in the food sector-based policies.
