The article, which summarizes the arguments exposed in Punishing the Poor, attempts to develop a theory of the State at the time of neoliberalism. According to the author, the restrictive economic policies based on the exploitation of disqualified labor and on crumbling social acquisitions, on the one hand, and the prison management of crime, on the other hand, represent the two sides of the same coin. What emerges is a highly contradictory vision: decidedly liberal State economically and tolerant towards elites; deeply violent and active in legal and towards the cast-off.
