The author reflects upon the role played by Levi the Writer in helping Levi the Man hold the "nameless" physical and mental pain over the course of his enslavement, as suffered by his fellow community members, in a concentration camp, and in his adventurous journey home. Through his novels he made his "atypical work of self-analysis" public, bearing testimony to the way in which his abilities of observation and thought proved to be important factors for survival in such extreme conditions.
