The aim of this survey is to draw attention on the growth of historical studies concerning the topic of consumption in today’s Italy, and in particular on the underlying criticism often inspiring their treatment of the ambiguous concepts of consumer freedom and consumer society, to end with the suggestion of some research trails that might enrich their findings. Special importance is given to the works combining enterprise history with consumption history in an exploration of the development of commercial premises: department stores, supermarkets and motorway catering services. The assumption is that such approach would be helpful in inquiring into the relationships between consumer freedom and the marketing and expansion policies pursued by certain companies which made the history of this country also in terms of influence on custom and social attitudes.
