In the past century the application of mass psychology radically changed the economics, the politics and the war. Starting from the experience of the First World War, the interest in collective phenomena has been intertwined with the capitalist need to expand market and consumption, and identify consumers no longer as individuals but as social groups. This paper examines the interplay between mass psychology, economics and secret services. To this goal, it examines some of the key figures in this connection including Edward Bernays, Freud nephew, and Sergei Stepanovich Chakotin.
