This article is an analysis of the relations between civilians and the military during the reign of Juan Carlos I (1975-2011). In particular, the essay studies the distinct phases the relationship has gone through: a short post-Franco period which corresponds to the first government of the monarchy (1975-1976); the long military transition (1976-1989), which is clearly chronologically broader than the official transition; an interval which ran from 1989 until 1996; the professionalisation or "voluntarisation" of the Armed Forces (1996-2008); the consequences of the economic crisis which began in 2008 on the Spanish army and its relations with the other state institutions and the civil society. The main argument of this article is that at the beginning of the twenty-first century the Spanish Armed Forces present both modern and post-modern characteristics.
