This note examines the volume Civiltà della crisi, that collects Luisa Mangoni’s essays on the Italian cultural evolution between the nineteenth and the twentieth century, a thorough research the late distinguished scholar conducted for over forty years, focusing on the relationships between politics and culture. The approach inspiring her work was a constant effort to dig into the depths of events without being contented with what is public or published, in the firm conviction that "the complexity of cultural phenomena doesn’t allow schematisations" and that the history of intellectuals has often been characterised by non-linear and intricate developments.
