The author emphasizes, in Hemingway work, especially in The Old Man and the Sea, the importance of complex male characters. These ones, as fathers, are able not only to protect and to help their sons, but in fitting into them into the world also. In the same time these men have a lot of troubles in then relation with women. The Hemingway work, in a recent kleinian psychoanalytic view, gives us an example of male ability - today not so widespread - to put themselves like "third" as regard the couple mother/child and to encourage the individual and family development.

Keywords: Hemingway, father, oedipic triangle, capability, violence
