The article examines the evolution of the History of Journalism as an academic discipline in Italy, since 1912. In that year Luigi Piccioni, a literary critic and professor at the University of Turin, gave the very first course of History of Journalism in Italy. In 1927 the Fascist regime established the first chair in History of Journalism at the Faculty of Political Science of the University of Perugia. Later on in the 1970s a group of scholars gave an important contribution to the renovation of this discipline, eventually leading to the publication of the History of Italian Press in seven volumes, published by Laterza. In the 1990s, finally, with the rise of new research interests in the field of mass communication, the spread of Internet and the opening of new Communication faculties in Italian universities, the History of Journalism entered a new phase. Hence, in recent years this discipline acquired the name of History of Journalism and Mass Communications or History of Media and Journalism.
