This paper takes up the question of the analyst’s roles in the analytic situation. The author argues that for the patient, the analyst inevitably wears several hats. At various times and in various phases of the analysis he is a real object, a transference object, an old object, and a new object, and that each of these roles contributes to the therapeutic action of psychoanalysis. The author includes a clinical example to illustrate how these interweaving and overlapping roles function in analytic treatment.
