The paper focuses on the challenges of the contemporary world, analysed from the historical perspective. The author claims that today’s agricultural law has been shaped over the centuries as a response to the changing challenges with which it had to cope. Thus the development of agricultural law can be divided in three stages: pre-industrial, industrial and post- industrial. Today, the implementation of the current model of sustainable agriculture poses an extremely difficult task for both, the agricultural policy as well as the agricultural law. The author concludes that the development of agricultural legislation as a response to contemporary challenges should be accompanied by the development of research in the area. Agricultural law plays a special role here as it may, in conjunction with other sciences, support the development of sustainable agriculture, encourage the conception of public good in agriculture, as well as evaluate the existing legislation, recommending necessary improvements. It is only a shame that the contemporary challenges of agricultural law do not entail more interest in the subject among scholars or researchers in agricultural law. It is indeed a paradox and a situation that neither facilitates the teaching of that law nor help to make of apply the law.
