The Author makes a general survey of Middle Platonic demonology by analysing the relationship between demonology and cosmology, the philosophy of religion, psychology and eschatology respectively. He highlights the role of the theological interpretation of Timaeus in defining the nature and topography of daimones and of the demonological reading of Homer in the formation of the Middle Platonic nature of Socrates’ daimôn. He also underlines Plutarch’s contribution to establishing a place for demonology in the framework of a multi-layered theological hermeneutics of religion.

Keywords: Middle Platonism, demonology, cosmology, providence, religion, Socrates
