The author proposes some excerpts from the book The sex act in man and woman considered as the first study published on the physiology of sexuality that marks the advent of modern sexology. The piece analyzes the historical context of the publication and provides the fundamental findings of the research in clinical sexology to which, still nowadays specialists worldwide refer to. General and specific physiological phenomena that occur during sex are extrapolated from the book and also similar reactions and responses in men and women are shown. The results are then re-presented in the summary tables.
