The Author proposes an analytical interpretation of a traditional Korean fairy¬tale, named "ChunHyang" from the heroin of the story. The tale is about the hardships of a pretty and wise girl, ChunHyang, daughter of a courtesan and of a judge, engaged to the young MongRyong. She then has to fight against a powerful and despotic official of the King who desires her as his concubine. As the story unfolds, featuring typical tòpoi of fairytales including a happy ending, we meet male and female characters that the Author of the article interprets according to analytical psychology as archetypal images. The relationship between the heroin and these characters can be symbolically translated into the relationship between the conscience and the psychic unconscious contents that they represent. From the coniunctio oppositorum, that is The union of conscience and unconscious represented by the marriage between ChunHyang and MongRyong, comes the transformational symbolic experience. Looking thoughtfully at the feminine condition, the Author hopes that modern women can achieve a similarly generative connection with their internal psychic world, in order to foster their tendency to individuation.
