The contribution aims to present a synthetic reflection on the importance of European citizenship to give shape to the building of a united Europe on the basis of the will of the member states, but with the consent of their citizens united, albeit in the diversity of their national affiliations, from the bonds of a common citizenship, complementing and integrating the content of rights (and duties) of national citizenship. The keystone of this common citizenship is the solidarity between European peoples, as counterweight to both the economic freedoms of the market and the austerity policies, in the perspective of a political union that finds expression and foundation in the social value of European citizenship.
