The teaching of history in Eastern Europe is an extraordinary field of invention of tradition. The Ukrainian case is exemplary. It shows that, together with the process of independence, scholars and historians have proposed an identity story that, starting from the same invention of the Ukrainian landscape, exalts the phases of the early neolithic civilizations - the Trypillian Civilisation - and finds in the Principality of Kiev the moment of national consecration. These are reconstructions, which in the Eighteenth and Nineteenth centuries were subject to profound storiographic controversy, which at the end of the Twentieth century became an identity battle.

Keywords: Invention of Tradition, Ukraine, Teaching History, National myths, Principality of Kiev, Civilization, Trypillian.
