This essay reconstructs the negotiations conducted by the Republic of Lucca, first in Rome and then in Vienna, for the purchase of a small episcopal fief located within its territory. Three fundamental points are highlighted: the strategic importance attributed to this fief in light of the jurisdictional action of the State of Lucca in its relations with the local Diocese; the uncertainties and ambiguities regarding its juridical origins, linked to some imperial donations made to the local bishops during the Medieval Period; the diplomatic strategies adopted by the Republic of Lucca to finally reach its desired purchase.
