This contribution examines some of the works produced at the conference held at Vercelli and compares distinctive features of pontifical fiefs with those of imperial fiefs. Many analogies emerge from the investigations: both pontifical as imperial fiefs were "enclaves semisovrane"; papal vassals (as imperial ones sometimes) belonged to a "border nobility" because they lived in two different spheres of influence. On the contrary, the achievement of a feudal title seems to be different: in fact, there were more ways to reach the goal in the pontifical spheres.
