The article explores the literary and historical production of Mary Renault (1905-1983), a British writer who emigrated in South Africa, with particular attention to the Trilogy of Alexander the Great. The essay analyses the influence exercised on the author’s poetry by the complex vicissitudes that animated the political and social history of the decades that followed the Second World War, with particular attention to issues related to the struggle for the emancipation of the gay community. The study includes an analysis of how Mary Renault’s work can be read within the historiography about Alexander the Great and homosexuality in the ancient Greek world.
