The essay proposes a survey of the main interpretations of the birth of the Christian Democratic party proposed by historians over the last forty years. The contribution focuses on the periodization and the main thematic questions around which the most recent historiography developed. The dichotomous interpretations proposed during the 1970s were replaced in the following decade by more balanced studies, which highlighted a more articulated image of the various sources of inspiration of the Christian Democratic party. In the 1990s the crisis of the party led many to reexamine the birth of the DC in search of the origins of the failure of the Italian political system. During the last two decades’ historiography did not seem to be particularly interested in the beginnings of the Christian Democratic party, although some significant studies did emerge. Among the most investigated topics are the Christian Democratic political culture, the phenome-non of the correnti, the role of the main political protagonists, the relationship with the Vatican hierarchies, the international organization of the party.
