The article reflects on the historiography about the two most important leaders of the Christian Democracy Party, Amintore Fanfani and Aldo Moro. The article starts with a methodological description of leadership in the Italian Christian Democracy, a so-called "federation-party", and within the context of an imperfect two party-system like the Italian one. It is, then, divided in two parts. The first one deals with the Center-Left period. Here the article underlines the primacy of Fanfani’s leadership, on one hand, and the rise of Moro’s leadership, on the other one. Furthermore, it explains the different interpretations of Center-Left governments and the role of the two leaders in this period. The second part of the article focuses on the so-called "Moro decade". At this time Moro’s leadership was pivotal; on the contrary, Fanfani almost disappears from historical literature. The article is based on a historiographical analysis - research articles and books -, including also the main volumes on the history of the Italian Republic.
